On May 25th, the United Nations General Assembly declared World Football Day in honor of the 100th anniversary of the first international football tournament, which took place during the 1924 Summer Olympic Games in Paris. Libya’s representative to the UN, Taher M. El-Sonni, introduced the resolution and it was supported by over 160 countries in the Assembly.
During his speech, El-Sonni highlighted the universal appeal of football and how it brings communities together regardless of cultural or economic differences. He emphasized that football is more than just a sport; it is a language that is understood worldwide. The President of the General Assembly, Dennis Francis, praised the adoption of the resolution, recognizing football’s ability to promote values such as teamwork, fair play, and tolerance. He also highlighted sports’ role in fostering peace and solidarity globally.
The resolution reflects the importance of football in uniting people and promoting positive values across borders.
