Castaways stranded on an African island pursue a passing cruise ship

Eight Norwegian Cruise passengers, including Jill and Jay Campbell from South Carolina, found themselves stranded on the African island state of São Tomé and Príncipe. The Campbells were left behind during a tour on the island, despite efforts to contact the ship’s captain and board a small boat provided by the local Coast Guard.

Despite being without access to medications or accepted credit cards on the island, the Campbells used their Visa card to pay for food and accommodations for their fellow stranded passengers, spending thousands of dollars in the process. After a failed attempt to rejoin their ship in Gambia, the group made another effort near the Senegalese coast in hopes of reuniting with the cruise ship.

The shipping company stated that the passengers missed the designated boarding time and failed to return to the ship in time. Despite this unfortunate situation, the company emphasized that it is always important for guests to ensure they return to the ship on time, as boarding information is communicated extensively before departure.
