Verizon, ADOT, and MAG’s pilot program earns transportation award for innovative technology use

Verizon Public Sector, in collaboration with the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) and the Maricopa Association of Governments, has announced the success of its pilot program testing a new vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technology in Maricopa County, Arizona. The program was awarded the Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSMO) Award in the Emerging Trends and Technologies category for its innovative approach to revolutionizing how state and local governments communicate with drivers nationwide.

TJ Fox, Senior Vice President of Industrial IoT and Automotive at Verizon Business, expressed his excitement about the TSMO award’s significance in showcasing V2X technology’s potential to transform communication between vehicles and transportation infrastructure. The award validates that this cutting-edge technology is viable and can enhance safety notices’ timely delivery between vehicles on Arizona’s interstate and state highway systems.

The pilot program aimed to use V2X capabilities to deliver critical safety notices efficiently to drivers on Arizona’s highways. By testing this technology’s effectiveness, it serves as a stepping stone towards a future where vehicles can seamlessly interact with transportation infrastructure. Susan Anderson, Systems Technology Group Manager for ADOT’s Transportation Systems Management and Operations division, emphasized the importance of positioning for V2X technology’s integration into transportation systems. The program leveraged public Multi-access Edge Compute (MEC) infrastructure to optimize communication between vehicles and transportation infrastructure.

The pilot program took place from December 2021 to May 2022, demonstrating V2X technology’s potential to improve road safety by enhancing communication between vehicles and transportation infrastructure.
