Marko Mišić, a Croatian man who was born in Brezica and returned to his birthplace before his unfortunate death at 68 years old, passed away in a hospital in Slavonski Brod on November 14, 2023. He died due to the severe beating he suffered while trying to prevent the theft of wood from his forest. His funeral took place on November 18 at the local cemetery in Brezici, and was attended by many well-wishers.
Marko was known for his work ethic and spent his entire career as a craftsman working abroad before returning to his homeland and rebuilding his home in 2008. He was remembered as a hardworking, honest, and pious man by the parish guardian and parish priest Fr. Anto Tomas. Marko’s family will deeply miss him as he was a father of three children and five grandchildren.
On October 12th, Marko sustained severe brain, lung, and rib injuries when he tried to prevent wood thieves from stealing from his forest. His condition remained critical throughout his time in the hospital. Two suspects have been taken into custody for their role in the assault, one of whom is a minor. The community is mourning the loss of such an important member of their community.
