Saskatchewan Roughriders of the CFL secure exclusive rights to negotiate with Chase Claypool

The CFL is keeping a close eye on free-agent receiver Chase Claypool. Despite being a second-round draft pick of the Steelers in 2020, Claypool’s name has not surfaced during the current signing period. As a result, the Saskatchewan Roughriders have taken action by adding him to their exclusive negotiating list.

In his rookie season with the Steelers, Claypool scored a total of 11 touchdowns and gained 873 receiving yards. He followed this up with an additional 860 yards in his second season with the team. However, his third season with the Steelers was cut short when he was traded to the Bears for a second-round pick. Due to tampering by Miami, this pick was ultimately the 32nd overall selection in the draft. The Bears later traded Claypool during the 2023 season for a swap of sixth- and seventh-round picks in 2025.

Despite having limited playing time with the Dolphins, Claypool’s once promising football career has taken a negative turn in the last two seasons. It remains to be seen if he will find a new team after the draft or if he will have to wait for injuries to create an opportunity. Regardless, Claypool could be a potential destination for the CFL as he navigates his future in professional football.
