Florida Sports Betting Legalization Causes Increase in Demand for Gambling Addiction Hotline- NBC 6 South Florida

The increase in demand for services from the Florida Council on Compulsive Gambling has been attributed to the use of sports betting apps. This nonprofit organization, responsible for running Florida’s addictive gambling prevention program, has reported a 138% increase in demand from December to January.

According to NBC6 affiliate WPTV, the organization anticipates receiving around 40,000 calls this fiscal year, which is significantly higher than the 26,000 calls received in the previous year. The rise in demand has come at a time when the organization is already struggling to keep up with the needs of Florida residents.

The American Gaming Association estimates that a record 67.8 million Americans placed bets on the Super Bowl. This increased accessibility to sports betting has likely contributed to the rise in demand for services to address gambling addiction. Young adult men are particularly at risk for gambling addiction, and this demographic has noticed a significant increase in calls to the organization.
