Sherri Tynes, a remarkable woman with an illustrious career in sports, is the only woman being inducted into the Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame this year. Tynes has achieved numerous accolades throughout her career, including being named four-time Mid-Eastern Coach of the Year and head coach of the North Carolina East/West All-Star Game. She also made history by winning the first-ever North Carolina High School State Championship in fast-pitch softball.

Despite retiring, Tynes remains active and dedicated to fitness. She engages in daily activities like swimming, cycling, and weight training, which she credits to her background as a physical educator and coach. Tynes has always been involved in sports, starting at a young age with encouragement from her father. She played multiple sports in high school before playing basketball in college at East Tennessee State.

Tynes’ coaching career began in college hoops at various universities before transitioning to high school coaching at Laney High School. Over the years, she has coached a variety of sports, including men’s and women’s golf, women’s basketball, and both fast and slow-pitch softball. Her impressive coaching record stands at 423-189 throughout her high school coaching career.

She considers herself fortunate to have had such a strong support system throughout her career. The local legend will be honored with her induction into the Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame on May 19, acknowledging her significant contributions to sports in the community.
