Senate approves direct election of prime minister

The Constitutional Affairs Commission of the Senate has approved a government amendment that modifies article 92 of the Constitution and introduces direct election of the President of the Council of Ministers. This change aims to increase transparency and accountability in the political system by allowing for direct suffrage in selecting the head of government.

The Government, as per the approved text, is made up of the Prime Minister and ministers, who together constitute the Council of Ministers. The Prime Minister is elected by universal and direct suffrage for five years, for no more than two consecutive legislatures, raised to three if in the previous ones he held the office for a period of less than seven years and six months. This ensures that there is a clear separation of powers within government.

The elections for Chambers and Prime Minister will take place at the same time. The law regulates this process by assigning a prize on a national basis that guarantees a majority of seats in each Chamber to lists and candidates linked to the Prime Minister, in compliance with representativeness.

Under this new system, once elected, the Prime Minister will have authority to appoint and revoke ministers. This streamlines government formation and ensures that there are no delays or unnecessary bureaucracy involved in bringing about changes within government structures.

Overall, this amendment represents a significant step towards creating a more representative and responsive government structure, as it increases transparency and accountability while also streamlining processes within government.

This amendment allows voters to have more control over their representatives by electing them directly instead of having them appointed indirectly through political parties or other means. It also allows for greater flexibility within government structures by giving elected officials more autonomy to make decisions without interference from other branches or external factors.

In conclusion, this amendment represents an important step forward in creating a more democratic society where citizens have greater control over their representatives and government structures are more responsive to their needs.
