Operation Medicine Drop, in partnership with ECU Health, collects prescription drugs for disposal

Since 2010, Operation Medicine Drop has successfully collected over 266 million pills through both permanent drop boxes and events across North Carolina. These efforts have been instrumental in keeping the community safe by providing a convenient way for the public to dispose of their prescription and over-the-counter medications. The campaign is a collaborative effort involving Safe Kids North Carolina, the North Carolina Department of Justice, the Drug Enforcement Agency, and the State Bureau of Investigation.

The importance of medication disposal events was emphasized by Lillie Malpass, executive director at PCCSU. She highlighted that these events help prevent medications from ending up in the wrong hands, particularly those of youth and children. Community organizations have partnered with Operation Medicine Drop to ensure that resources such as lockboxes are available to the public.

Local sheriff’s offices, police departments, and some fire departments maintain permanent medication drop boxes for those who may have missed an event. This ongoing effort underscores the commitment of various agencies to keeping communities safe from the potential dangers of improper medication disposal. By providing safe and secure disposal options, Operation Medicine Drop continues to promote safe medication disposal practices and protect the well-being of the community and environment.
