The NFL trade deadline has been extended until after Week 9.

The NFL has announced that the trade deadline will be moved to the Tuesday after Week 9 in the 2024 season, following approval during the league’s annual meetings. The initial proposal to move the deadline back two weeks after Week 10 was submitted by Cleveland Browns general manager Andrew Berry and supported by several teams, including the Detroit Lions, New York Jets, Philadelphia Eagles, and Washington Commanders. However, it was ultimately the Pittsburgh Steelers’ proposal to push it back only one week that received the necessary three-fourths approval to pass.

One of the reasons behind Berry’s proposal was to give teams more flexibility as they head into the second half of the regular season. He also emphasized that it would maintain competitive integrity and provide teams with more time before deciding to sell off their roster. Berry pointed out that while the trade deadline had not been adjusted when the NFL transitioned to an 18-week regular season, other aspects of the game had changed significantly over time.

Over the past decade, teams have been eliminated from postseason contention as early as Week 11. Berry argued that moving the trade deadline to after Week 10 would allow teams to remain competitive and have additional flexibility in their decision-making process. Since 2012, the NFL trade deadline has been set for late November or early December.

The upcoming season will see teams having until 4 p.m. ET on November 5 to finalize any trades before starting their second half of regular season games.
