The Japanese Swimming Federation (JASF) has announced the qualification criteria for the 2024 World Championships, which will take place in Doha, Qatar in February. To be considered for selection, swimmers must have achieved a ‘dispatch III’ time from the organization’s Paris Olympic Selection Criteria. A maximum roster count of 10 has been specified.
As of now, only three swimmers have hit the qualification times at approved competitions: Katsuhiro Matsumoto in the men’s 100m fly event at the 2022 (2023) Asian Games; Tomoru Honda in the men’s 200m fly event at the same meet; and Ageha Tanigawa in the women’s 400m IM event also at the 2022 (2023) Asian Games. Reona Aoki earned a qualifying time in the women’s 100m breast event at the 2023 Tokyo Swimming Center Invitational.
The Japanese swimming team had a disappointing performance at the 2023 World Championships held in Fukuoka, Japan, finishing 17th in the swimming medal table. However, Tomoru Honda earned a bronze in the men’s 200m fly and Daiya Seto collected bronze in the men’s 400m IM event.
