Vestibular Disorder Linked to Atherosclerotic Cerebrovascular Disease

On April 2, Mr. Ninh, a 63-year-old man from Hanoi, went to Tam Anh General Hospital after experiencing sudden dizziness and loss of balance. Initially, he attributed his symptoms to a vestibular disorder. However, upon examination by a doctor, it was discovered that he had atherosclerosis in multiple segments of his cerebral arteries.

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Xuan Hien, Director of the Center for Diagnostic Imaging and Interventional Radiology at Tam Anh General Hospital explained that Mr. Ninh had over 95% narrowing of the basilar artery, along with other issues in his circulatory system. Given his history of hypertension, dyslipidemia, and smoking, the risk of a life-threatening stroke was high. In order to prevent this, it was recommended that the basilar artery be dilated and stented immediately.

Despite the potential risks involved in the procedure, the medical team decided that it was the best course of action to save Mr. Ninh’s life. Utilizing digital subtraction angiography and 3D imaging, the doctors successfully dilated the narrowed vessel and placed a stent. Post-intervention, Mr. Ninh underwent rehabilitation and managed his blood lipid disorders to address the remaining narrowed arteries.

The basilar artery is responsible for supplying blood to the brain stem and plays a crucial role in various bodily functions when it becomes narrowed due to atherosclerosis, the risk of stroke significantly increases.
