Sources reveal that YES Network engaged in conversations with Buck Showalter regarding potential involvement with Yankees’ regional network

The YES Network had a strong interest in hiring two former New York Yankee managers during the offseason. Along with Joe Girardi, who was previously Boone’s predecessor as manager of the team, they also had discussions with Buck Showalter. Showalter was under contract with the Mets and had the right to prevent any talks from advancing once his status became known, but he was fired after a disappointing season.

Despite their initial interest in Showalter, the Mets stated that they would not prevent him from pursuing other opportunities, including a job at YES. Although talks with Showalter were only preliminary and did not progress further due to his contract status, he has previous experience as a TV analyst and will be part of MLB Network’s coverage this season.

Girardi’s addition to YES is unique because he was replaced by Boone after being fired following the Yankees’ 2017 season where they reached ALCS Game 7. With Boone facing criticism for failing to make the playoffs last year, it is unclear if Showalter would have accepted a job with YES if offered. However, given his role on MLBN will be broader and limited to once-a-month appearances, there won’t be any conflicts or second-guessing issues associated with it.
