Innovation Award: Release System Recognized for Technological Advancements

Koppert has won first place in the international Fruit Logistica Innovation Award Technology for its biological solution, ‘Mirical’, which uses corrugated cardboard as packaging to protect beneficial bugs during transportation. The award, which focuses on innovations in the entire fruit and vegetable supply chain, was presented in Berlin on 9 February.

Koppert’s product manager, Tim Bossinga, says that innovation is at the core of their DNA and is a result of their continuous product development. The company has replaced plastic product packaging with corrugated cardboard because it forms a “natural habitat for the Mirical beneficial bugs.” The corrugations enable bugs to hide and better distribute themselves during transportation, protecting them from predators and ensuring they arrive at their destination in optimal condition. Additionally, the packaging reduces clumping while improving bug distribution in the crop, leading to better performance and whitefly control.

The generalist pest predator Mirical has a preference for greenhouse whitefly, tobacco whitefly, eggs, caterpillars of the tomato leaf miner moth, and other moths. They also feed on two-spotted spider mites, aphids , and leaf miner larvae. The product was launched in France last year.
