Mother awarded $1.5 million after winning case against Zumbro Valley Health Center following son’s death

Jill Adams, a Red Wing mother, received a $1.5 million settlement in a lawsuit against Zumbro Valley Health Center following the death of her son, Caleb Malek, in 2021. Court records show that jurors found the Rochester health center negligent in its care and treatment of Malek.

The lawsuit alleged that Zumbro Valley employees did not adhere to the policy of checking on Malek every 15 minutes and failed to adequately screen him for drugs upon admission. Additionally, it was claimed that the health center failed to train its staff to recognize signs of a breathing problem, which may have contributed to Malek’s death.

The verdict form for the case was dated March 22, 2024, with the jury ruling in favor of Adams. This decision serves as a reminder of the importance of proper healthcare and accountability in our communities. To stay updated on more news and updates, download the KTTC app today.
