On Saturday, Israeli airstrikes targeted the Syrian city of Damascus, killing at least three people and injuring a large number of others. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported that the attack hit a neighborhood that housed mansions belonging to members of the army and high-ranking officials.
According to the Syrian state news agency, Sana, the Israeli enemy carried out an air aggression targeting several targets in the vicinity of Damascus. The air defense systems intercepted some rockets, while others caused material damage. SOHR also reports that on Friday, the area around the Mazza military airport west of Damascus was attacked without specifying who was behind the missile attack. Militant groups, including Hezbollah and other pro-Iranian armed groups, are present in the area.
The Israeli military has been carrying out hundreds of attacks against these groups since the start of the Syrian civil war in 2011. Since last October’s war with Hamas began, Israel has stepped up its attacks on armed groups backed by Iran. Iran is an ally of Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad’s government and a key sponsor of Hezbollah in Lebanon. Israel says it will not allow Iran’s presence to be strengthened in Syria.
