Kia EV9 Claims Top Honors as 2024 World Car of the Year and Best Electric Car at New York Auto Show

The Hyundai Group has a strong hold on winning prestigious vehicle awards, especially in the electric vehicle category. In 2024, Kia made a strong comeback with the new EV9 winning the World Car of the Year and World Electric Vehicle titles, while the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N won World Performance Car.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 also won three other major awards – World Electric Vehicle and World Car Design of the Year – in 2022 and 2023 respectively. This marks a significant achievement for the group’s electric vehicle lineup.

To be eligible for entry, a car must have an annual production exceeding 10,000 units, be available in at least two major global markets, and be priced lower than luxury options in their region. A panel of one hundred automotive journalists from 29 countries tested 38 vehicles to determine the winners.

The EV9 beat out competitors like the BYD Seal and Volvo EX30 to win the WCOTY award. In the electric vehicle category, the EV9 competed against 32 other cars and outperformed rivals like the BMW i5 and Volvo EX30. The BMW 5 Series and i5 took home the World Luxury Car title, while the EX30 won the World Urban Car award.
