A new small business has opened in Bowling Green, Kentucky, and it is the second of its kind in the state. Sweaty Glass, owned by Shane Spickard, specializes in the art of glass blowing.
Spickard’s passion for glass blowing began when he attended the Appalachian Center for Craft in Smithville, Tennessee. He fell in love with the art form and has been fine-tuning his creations since 2019. Now, he has transformed a garage into his own glass making factory where he creates glass cups, vases, and other decorations using melted glass. Spickard also teaches classes for those interested in learning the art of glass blowing.
The process of creating these glass pieces is intricate and mesmerizing. Spickard heats the glass, adds glass frit to create designs, and sculpts the shape using various tools. He even uses wet newspaper to shape the glass, and blows air through a blowpipe to help inflate and shape the vase. After smoothing out the glass with a torch, the piece is placed in a stove for 12 hours.
Sweaty Glass is located at 144 W 10th Avenue in Bowling Green and offers classes for anyone interested in learning the art of glass blowing. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced artist, Spickard’s classes are designed to help you perfect your skills and create unique pieces of your own. So if you’ve always wanted to try your hand at this fascinating art form
