Saving a life: how 45 minutes of patient resuscitation revived someone in cardiac arrest

In Ho Chi Minh City, a 39-year-old man collapsed and suffered a cardiac arrest while attempting to block a ball with his chest. Doctors at Gia Dinh People’s Hospital were able to resuscitate the patient for 45 minutes with 10 electric shocks before performing ECMO to save his life.

Upon arrival at the hospital, the patient was found to have no pulse or measurable blood pressure, and was experiencing continuous ventricular tachycardia. Despite continued efforts to massage the heart and administer electric shocks, the patient did not respond. The medical team persevered in their resuscitation attempts for 45 minutes before signs of recovery were seen. However, the patient experienced severe hypotension and pulmonary edema.

To protect the patient’s brain and support his heart and lungs, doctors utilized both hypothermia and ECMO treatments in addition to continuous dialysis over 48 hours. After 72 hours on ECMO, ventilation support was removed, and after four days of continued support, the patient was discharged from ICU care.

Genetic testing revealed a mutation in the MYPN gene that is linked to dilated cardiomyopathy and sudden death. The patient received a defibrillator implantation to prevent future sudden deaths and will undergo cardiovascular rehabilitation before resuming normal activities. It is crucial for individuals participating in sports to understand their cardiovascular health, especially if they have a family history of sudden cardiac death, and seek medical attention if symptoms arise during physical activity.

In conclusion, this case serves as a reminder of how specialized medical interventions combined with genetic testing can lead to successful outcomes for patients suffering from serious cardiac conditions. It is essential that individuals take proactive steps towards understanding their cardiovascular health in order to minimize risks associated with sudden deaths during physical activity.
