Delaware Tourism Office Collaborates with New and Existing Sports Facilities to Attract Events to the State

The Delaware Tourism Office has recently established the Delaware Sports Tourism Capital Investment Fund to provide financial support to First State sports facilities. This fund was made possible through the FY24 Bond Bill and will begin accepting applications on March 1, with a deadline of April 12.

Delaware Tourism Office Director Jessica Welch stated that the purpose of this fund is to help new or existing sports facilities that host events and tournaments throughout the year, bringing in out-of-state visitors and creating an economic impact at the state and local level. Welch further explained that this fund will enable the tourism office to remain competitive in sports tourism.

Delaware has recently hosted several notable events, including the Atlantic 10 Women’s Basketball Tournament, the PGA’s 2022 BMW Championship, the MEAC Volleyball Championship, and numerous regional high school and youth sports events. The plan is to support a range of different facilities with this fund.

Welch noted that events held on weekends during the summer bring significant revenue to the state because they are consistent and create a reputation at the facility where they take place. Officials expect that this fund will help attract more visitors and continue to highlight reasons for people to visit Delaware.

The Delaware Tourism Office will hold two informative webinars for potential applicants later this month to learn about the fund’s details and requirements.
