Black Barbershop Health Initiative scheduled for Saturday in Evansville

The annual Indiana Black Barbershop Health Initiative will take place this Saturday in Evansville, providing free health screenings and education on chronic diseases. This statewide effort aims to offer important health resources to the community, recognizing that Black barbershops play a crucial role in the health of Black men.

Barbershops often serve as a therapy center and a place of healing, built on trust between Black men and their barbers. This makes them an ideal setting for providing health screenings and education to encourage Black men to seek preventative medical care. Statistics from the Indiana Department of Health show that Black men have the highest mortality rate of any group in Indiana, with prostate cancer being more prevalent among Black men than any other racial or ethnic group.

Recognizing the importance of addressing these health disparities, the Black Barbershop Health Initiative aims to provide accessible health resources to the community. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at seven participating locations in Evansville, including Fila’s Designs, Jerald’s Barbershop, The Dapper Man’s Parlor, Lynch’s House of Coiffure, Going Forward Barber & Beauty Shop, Super Fresh, and Chinnos. This initiative is an important opportunity for Black men in the community to prioritize their health and well-being.
