India’s Under-19 Team No Longer Dominates World Cup Chase: Statistics

Australia has secured its fourth Under-19 World Cup title, defeating India by 79 runs. This victory marks the fourth time that Australia has won the tournament, with previous victories in 1988, 2002 and 2010. Only India has won more titles, with a total of five crowns to their name, including the previous edition in 2022.

India’s loss to Australia in the final ended their streak of 22 consecutive youth ODI matches won while chasing, with their previous defeat in a chase coming in August 2018 against Sri Lanka. Despite this defeat, India’s Uday Saharan emerged as a standout player, scoring 397 runs in the tournament, the second-most for a captain in a single edition.

Australia’s total of 253 for 7 against India in the final is the highest total by any team in an Under-19 World Cup match. This surpasses England’s previous highest chase of 242 for 3 in the 1998 edition. The win against India marked Australia’s first victory against them since 1998 and only one team has successfully defended their Under-19 World Cup crown – Pakistan in 2006. Both Australia and India have finished as runners-up while attempting to defend their title multiple times – notably in 2012, when both teams lost to Bangladesh and New Zealand respectively.
