Racial and Ethnic Groups Experience Greater Health Disparities Due to Unmet Needs, CDC Study Finds

A recent study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has revealed that racial and ethnic groups often experience negative health impacts due to unmet social and economic needs. The study surveyed adults nationwide to identify five specific needs, such as social connections and food security. These external challenges disproportionately affect low-income communities and individuals of diverse racial backgrounds, leading to disparities in chronic diseases across the country.

Dr. Karen Hacker, who leads the CDC’s National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, emphasized the importance of recognizing these external challenges and their impact on health. She stressed the need for collaboration between communities and policymakers to address these health disparities effectively. In addition to the national report, a random survey conducted in 42 states, including Arizona, will provide more state-specific data at the individual level.

ASU professor Zach Cordell believes that having diverse perspectives involved in discussions around healthcare solutions is crucial for healthcare professionals to better understand and serve their communities. He hopes that taking a holistic approach to care will lead to actionable steps to remove barriers to improved health outcomes as outlined in the study.

The study highlights the disproportionate burden placed on racial and ethnic minorities in terms of chronic diseases, emphasizing the need for policy solutions that address these unmet social and economic needs. By gaining a better understanding of how these needs affect health, policymakers can develop policies that improve care for all individuals regardless of race or ethnicity.

Overall, this study underscores the importance of addressing social determinants of health in order to improve healthcare outcomes for all populations. As Dr. Hacker stated, “We must work together as a society to ensure everyone has access to quality healthcare.”
