Sotheby’s is set to auction off six game-worn jerseys of Lionel Messi from the 2022 World Cup, with expectations of fetching $10 million. The jerseys, which are size medium, come from two of Argentina’s group stage matches, the Round of 16, quarterfinal, semifinal, and championship rounds.
After a disappointing defeat against Saudi Arabia in their first match at the World Cup, Messi and his Argentina squad went on to win their next six games and secure the nation’s first title since 1986. During these matches, Messi scored a total of seven goals, solidifying his legacy as the fourth-leading scorer in the tournament’s history.
The jerseys are being hailed as symbols of Messi’s incredible career and his unwavering passion for football. The auction for his jerseys is set to take place later this month.
Following his World Cup journey, Messi joined Inter Miami and has brought significant attention to the MLS. Ticket prices for Inter Miami’s home and away games have increased substantially due to Messi’s influence on the league.
In addition to winning the FIFA World Cup and leading Argentina to victory in all six group stage matches against Egypt, Tunisia, Uruguay, Morocco, France and Brazil respectively; Messi was also awarded FIFA’s Ballon d’Or for the eighth time in 2021 making him the first active player in a U.S league to receive this prestigious title. These achievements have cemented Messi’s impact on global football culture and continue to inspire fans around the world.
